Ever wanted to design cameras for a living? We catch up with the team behind our award winning COOLPIX designs

We’re delighted to tell all our fans about the recent award wins the Nikon COOLPIX range has won. The Nikon COOLPIX P300 has won a 2011 Good Design Award, one of the most prestigious design awards available for camera manufacturers. Meanwhile, at the iF Design awards 2012, the COOLPIX P300 and COOLPIX AW100 were both recognised for their innovative design, while the COOLPIX S100 picked up the iF communication design award.

The Good Design awards are given to the design of a camera that enriches everyday life with an outstanding quality, while the iF Design awards are the globally recognised awards that cover all aspects of design including product, communication and packaging design.

We caught up with Chikara Fujita – one of the lead designers for the award winning COOLPIX P300 – and his team to reveal the inside story of what it’s like to be a young designer at Nikon and the process they went through to create an award winning Nikon COOLPIX camera. Take a look at our video here:

Chikara has a good reason to believe he was born to be a designer. The direct translation of the word “strength” in Japanese is “Chikara” and one of Chikara’s strengths is his persistency with his designs, something that’s evident when you watch the video. It’s this level of attention to detail that Nikon has become synonymous with and was key to creating multi award winning cameras like the Nikon COOLPIX P300.

Is there a Nikon COOLPIX you’re particularly pleased with the design of? Or have you got any aspirations to be a camera designer like Chikara? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below if so!
